At many fairs in those days this was a popular attraction for the drivers.
They could test their strength here by hitting the button with a large wooden hammer, which made a ball shoot up, with a scale in the background to see how high the ball went.

In this toy by Martin the ball was replaced by the devil, this devil (with arms) is also used by the Martin number 16 – le jeu de massacre from 1885
